Question Marker 'sao'

Placing at the end of a statement transforms it into a question. Unlike standard neutral questions, this structure usually carries an emotional undertone, implying surprise, skepticism, or a need for confirmation regarding a specific situation.

01

Expressing Surprise or Disbelief

The most common use of as a final particle is to indicate that the speaker is surprised by what they are seeing or hearing. It functions similarly to the English "Really?" or "Is that so?" when reacting to unexpected news. The speaker often expects the opposite of what is happening.

  • Anh ấy là bác sĩ sao?

    Is he really a doctor?

  • Em không ăn cơm sao?

You aren't eating rice? (I am surprised because you usually do)

  • Bây giờ mới làm xong sao?

    You only just finished now?

02

Seeking Confirmation

You can use this particle to verify information you have just received or deduced. In this context, it asks "Is it true that...?" regarding the statement preceding it. It is less about asking for new information and more about confirming a fact that seems apparent but requires verification.

  • Hôm nay trời mưa sao?

Is it raining today? (I see wet ground or clouds)

  • Cô ấy đi rồi sao?

    Has she left already?

03

Difference from 'Không'

It is important to distinguish from the neutral question marker .

  • Use when you have a hunch, are reacting to a situation, or feel an emotion (like surprise or disappointment) regarding the answer.
  • Bạn thích món này không?

Do you like this dish? (Neutral question)

  • Bạn thích món này sao?

You actually like this dish? (Surprised/Skeptical tone)

04

  • Đó là sự thật hay sao?

    Is that the truth?
