The verb is one of the most fundamental words in the language. While its primary definition is to have (indicating possession), it is also the standard way to express existence, equivalent to the English phrases there is or there are.
01
Expressing Existence (There is / There are)
To state that something exists, simply use followed immediately by the noun. Unlike English, which requires a dummy subject like "there" or "it" (e.g., "There is a dog"), this language drops the subject entirely for general existence.
Có một cái bàn.
There is a table.
Có nhiều người ở đây.
There are many people here.
Có tin tốt.
There is good news.
02
Location as the Subject
When describing what exists in a specific place, the sentence structure often shifts. Instead of saying "There is X in Y," it is very common to say "Y has X." In this construction, the location acts as the subject of the sentence.
Structure: Location + + Noun
This makes the location sound like it possesses the items inside it.
Nhà tôi có ba phòng.
My house has three rooms. (There are three rooms in my house.)
Trên bàn có một quyển sách.
On the table, there is a book. (lit. On table has a book.)
Thành phố này có nhiều xe máy.
There are many motorbikes in this city.
03
Expressing Possession
When used with a person or a specific agent as the subject, functions as a standard verb of ownership, identical to the English to have.
Tôi có một người chị.
I have an older sister.
Anh ấy có tiền.
He has money.
04
Asking About Existence
To ask if something exists or if someone has something, the standard Yes/No question structure is used: ... ?. The word is placed at the end of the sentence.
Có ai ở đó không?
Is there anyone there?
Trong tủ lạnh có nước không?
Is there water in the fridge?
Bạn có bút không?
Do you have a pen?
