The future tense is used to talk about actions, events, or states that will happen or will be true in the future. It is formed by adding the suffix or to the verb stem, followed by a personal suffix.
01
Vowel Harmony: -ecek or -acak?
The choice between and depends on the last vowel in the verb stem. This is a fundamental rule of vowel harmony.
If the last vowel of the verb stem is a front vowel (e, i, ö, ü), use the suffix .
Geleceğim.
I will come.
Bunu göreceksin.
You will see this.
Yeni bir araba isteyecek.
He will want a new car.
If the last vowel of the verb stem is a back vowel (a, ı, o, u), use the suffix .
Yarın başlayacağız.
We will start tomorrow.
Onlar kapıyı kapatacaklar.
They will close the door.
Akşam yemeği yapacağım.
I will make dinner.
02
Consonant Mutation: k → ğ
When a personal suffix starting with a vowel is added to or , the final 'k' softens to 'ğ'. This happens for the first person singular (I) and first person plural (we).
For other persons, the 'k' remains because the personal suffix starts with a consonant or there is no suffix.
Conjugation of (to go):
- Ben gideceğim. - I will go.
- Sen gideceksin. - You will go.
- O gidecek. - He/She/It will go.
- Biz gideceğiz. - We will go.
- Siz gideceksiniz. - You (plural/formal) will go.
- Onlar gidecekler. - They will go.
03
Verbs Ending in a Vowel
If the verb stem ends in a vowel, a buffer letter 'y' is inserted between the stem and the future tense suffix /. This prevents two vowels from appearing next to each other.
Seni bekleyeceğim.
I will wait for you.
O, yarın partide şarkı söyleyecek.
She will sing at the party tomorrow.
Bu kitabı okuyacak mısın?
Will you read this book?
04
Negative Future Tense
To form the negative, the negation suffix or is added to the verb stem. This is followed by the buffer 'y' and then the future tense suffix.
The structure is: Verb Stem + / + y + / + Personal Suffix.
Bu akşam dışarı çıkmayacağım.
I will not go out tonight.
O, bu filmi izlemeyecek.
He will not watch this movie.
Toplantıya gelmeyecekler.
They will not come to the meeting.
05
Future Tense Questions
Questions are formed by adding the question particle / after the fully conjugated verb. The particle is written as a separate word and follows its own vowel harmony rules based on the last vowel of the verb.
Yarın bize yardım edecek misin?
Will you help us tomorrow?
Onlar da bizimle gelecekler mi?
Will they come with us too?
Bu yaz tatile gidecek miyiz?
Will we go on vacation this summer?
