Nouns: Locative Case

The locative case indicates the location of something or someone. It answers the question (Where?) and generally corresponds to the English prepositions in, on, or at. The suffix has four possible forms: . The correct form depends on the last vowel and the last consonant of the noun it attaches to.

01

Vowel Harmony (-da vs. -de)

The choice between and is determined by 2-way vowel harmony, based on the last vowel of the word.

If the last vowel is a back vowel (a, ı, o, u), use the suffix .

  • Kitap masada.

The book is on the table.

  • Çocuklar okulda.

    The children are at school.

If the last vowel is a front vowel (e, i, ö, ü), use the suffix .

  • Ben evdeyim.

    I am at home.

  • Anahtarlar çekmecede.

The keys are in the drawer.

02

Consonant Assimilation (-ta vs. -te)

If a word ends in one of the voiceless consonants f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h, p, the d in the locative suffix changes to a t. This is a process called consonant assimilation or devoicing. The vowel of the suffix still follows the rules of vowel harmony.

If the last vowel is a back vowel (a, ı, o, u) and the word ends in a voiceless consonant, use .

  • Aşçı mutfakta.

The cook is in the kitchen.

  • Kuş ağaçta şarkı söylüyor.

The bird is singing on the tree.

If the last vowel is a front vowel (e, i, ö, ü) and the word ends in a voiceless consonant, use .

  • Saat beşte buluşalım.

    Let's meet at five o'clock.

  • Yolcular otobüste bekliyor.

The passengers are waiting on the bus.

03

The Buffer Letter 'n' with Possessives

When a noun already has a 3rd person possessive suffix (like ), a buffer letter n must be inserted before adding the locative suffix. This rule applies only to the 3rd person possessive.

Compare a regular noun ending in a vowel with a possessed noun:

  • Regular noun: → (in the car)
  • Possessed noun: → (in his/her car)
  • Kedi, kutusunda uyuyor.

The cat is sleeping in its box.

  • Toplantı, şirketin ofisinde olacak.

The meeting will be in the company's office.

04

Locative with Proper Nouns

When adding the locative suffix to a proper noun, such as a name, city, or country, an apostrophe is used to separate the noun from the suffix.

  • Ankara'da yaşıyorum.

    I live in Ankara.

  • Bu kitap Ayşe'de mi?

    Is this book with Ayşe?

  • Almanya'da okudum.

    I studied in Germany.

05

Other Uses of the Locative Case

Besides physical location, the locative case is essential for expressing time and possession.

Time Expressions

It is used to specify when something happens, meaning at, in, or on a particular time.

  • Film saat dokuzda başlıyor.

The movie starts at nine o'clock.

  • Temmuz'da hava çok sıcak olur.

The weather is very hot in July.

Possession with 'var' and 'yok'

A very common structure uses the locative case with (there is/are) or (there is not/are not) to indicate possession. The literal meaning is "on me, X exists" or "on you, X does not exist".

  • Bende yirmi lira var.

    I have twenty liras.

  • Sizde şeker var mı?

    Do you have sugar?

  • Bizde araba yok.

    We don't have a car.
