is the number "one" - with the adjective suffix. But it does a second job far more often, and getting a feel for the difference is what makes sentences sound natural.
01
Mostly It Means 'a'
Tok Pisin has no word corresponding exactly to English "a" or "an", and has moved into that gap. In most sentences it is better translated "a" than "one".
Em wanpela tisa.
He is a teacher.
Em wanpela sumatin.
She is a student.
Em kaikai wanpela apol.
He is eating an apple.
Mipela ritim wanpela buk.
We read a book.
Mi lukim wanpela piksa stap.
I am watching a movie.
Mi bai bringim wanpela kamera.
I'll bring a camera.
None of these is counting.
02
And Sometimes It Really Means 'One'
The numeral sense is still live, and context - usually a contrast with another number - makes it obvious.
Mi gat wanpela maus na tupela ia.
I have one mouth and two ears.
Haus bilong mi i gat tupela rum slip.
My house has two bedrooms.
Mipela i gat tupela aua i stap yet.
We still have two hours left.
The first sentence is the clearest case: set against , can only be counting.
03
There Is No Word for 'the'
This is the other half of the picture. Where English would use "the", Tok Pisin normally uses the bare noun and lets context do the work.
Em nogat wok.
He doesn't have a job.
Bas i leit.
The bus is late.
Ples i kol.
The place is cold.
is "the bus is late" - a specific, known bus - with nothing marking it as definite. When it matters, Tok Pisin has other ways of pointing something out.
04
Leaving It Out
Because is not compulsory, a bare noun can also be indefinite. Naming someone's job works both ways, with or with a plain noun:
Mi wanpela tisa bilong Inglis.
I'm an English teacher.
Poro bilong em tu em tisa.
His friend is a teacher too.
Both patterns occur, and neither is wrong. Use when you are introducing something into the conversation for the first time, and leave it off when the noun is general.
05
With an Adjective
comes first, then the adjective, then the noun - the same order as English "a new book".
Wanpela nupela dol?
A new doll?
Bai yu laikim wanpela nupela bek?
Would you like a new bag?
Mi gat wanpela bel hevi.
I have a sadness.
06
A Note on the Numbers
and carry the same suffix as , and higher numbers take it too when they count something: , five minutes. The low numbers also fuse with pronouns to make the dual forms , "you two", and , "the two of us".
