Sentence-final 'ล่ะ' for Follow-ups and Emphasis

The particle (lâ) attaches to the end of a sentence to ask follow-up questions ("And what about…?"), to add weight to a question, or to mark a transition in conversation.

01

Asking "What About...?"

The most common use of (lâ) is to bounce a question back to the listener or shift focus to a new subject without repeating the full sentence. It works much like the English "And...?" or "What about...?"

  • ผมล่ะ

    pǒm lâphǒm lâphǒm lâ

    What about me?

  • พรุ่งนี้ล่ะ

    prûng·níi lâphrûng·ní lâphrûng·ní lâ

    What about tomorrow?

02

Adding Emphasis to a Question

(lâ) is often attached to question words like (tam·mai, "why") and (krai, "who") to give the question more weight or a shade of curiosity, surprise, or mild challenge. It does not change the literal meaning of the question — it makes it feel more pointed and conversational.

  • ใครล่ะ

    krai lâkhrai lâkhrai lâ

    Who, then?

  • ทำไมไม่บอกล่ะ

    tam·mai mâi bɔ̀ɔk lâtham·mai mâi bòk lâtham·mai mâi bò̦k lâ

    Why didn't you say (so)?

03

'เอาล่ะ' — "Alright then…"

The fixed expression (ao lâ) is used at the start of a turn to mark a transition or call attention before continuing — much like English "Alright then" or "OK so…"

  • เอาล่ะ ไปกัน

ao lâ bpai ganao lâ pai kanao lâ pai kan

    Alright, let's go.

  • เอาล่ะ พอแล้ว

ao lâ pɔɔ lɛ́ɛoao lâ pho láeoao lâ pho̦ lé̩o

    Alright, that's enough.
