Questions with هَلْ

The particle (hal) is the primary tool used to form interrogative sentences that require a "yes" or "no" answer. It functions similarly to the English auxiliary verbs "do," "does," "did," "is," or "are" when they are used to start a question.

01

Sentence Structure and Word Order

To turn a statement into a question, simply place (hal) at the very beginning of the sentence. Unlike English, which often requires rearranging words (inversion) or adding auxiliary verbs (like "do"), Arabic word order remains exactly the same as it is in a declarative statement.

  • ⁧هَلْ تَتَكَلَّمُ الْعَرَبِيَّةَ؟⁩

    hal tatakallamu al-ʿarabiyyata?hal tatakallamu al-ʿarabiyyata?hal tatakallamu ʾal-ʿarabiyyata?hal tatakalamu al-ʿarabiyata?

    Do you speak Arabic?

  • ⁧هَلْ هُوَ طَالِبٌ؟⁩

hal huwa ṭālibun?hal huwa ṭālibun?hal huwa ṭālibun?hal huwa ṭalibun?

    Is he a student?

02

Using '⁧هَلْ⁩ (hal)' with Verbs

When used with a verbal sentence, (hal) corresponds to "do," "does," or "did." It can be used with verbs in the present tense to ask about habits or current actions, and with verbs in the past tense to ask about completed actions.

  • ⁧هَلْ تُحِبُّ الْقَهْوَةَ؟⁩

    hal tuḥibbu al-qahwata?hal tuḥibbu al-qahwata?hal tuḥibbu ʾal-qahwata?hal tuḥibu al-qahwata?

03

Using '⁧هَلْ⁩ (hal)' with Nouns and Adjectives

In Arabic nominal sentences (sentences without a verb), there is no present tense word for "to be" (am, is, are). In these cases, (hal) is placed before the subject to ask questions like "Is this...?" or "Are you...?".

  • ⁧هَلْ الْبَيْتُ كَبِيرٌ؟⁩

    hal al-baytu kabīrun?hal al-baytu kabīrun?hal ʾal-baytu kabiyrun?hal al-baytu kabyrun?
