The particle is one of the most versatile words in Vietnamese. Depending on its position in the sentence, it can function as a question marker, an adverb meaning "like that," a conjunction meaning "so," or a particle indicating resignation.
01
Emphasizing Questions
In the Southern dialect, is frequently placed at the very end of a question. It acts as a softener or an emphasis marker, making the question sound more natural and conversational compared to a bare question word. It is commonly used with "what" (), "where" (), or "why" ().
Cái gì vậy?
What is that?
Anh đi đâu vậy?
Where are you going?
Sao bạn buồn vậy?
Why are you sad?
02
Describing Manner ("Like that" or "This way")
When follows a verb, it describes the manner in which an action is performed. In this context, it translates to "like that," "like this," or "this way." It indicates that the action is being done in a specific manner previously mentioned or currently observed.
Đừng làm vậy.
Don't do it like that.
Sao bạn nhìn tui như vậy?
Why are you looking at me like that?
Cứ nói vậy đi.
Just say it this way.
03
Expressing Resignation or Reluctance
When placed at the end of a statement—often preceded by (well/stop)— changes the tone to indicate resignation. It suggests that the speaker is accepting a situation or choosing an action because there are no better options available. It translates roughly to "I guess," "then," or "might as well."
Thôi, tui về vậy.
Well, I guess I'll go home then.
Hết phở rồi thì ăn cơm vậy.
If there is no pho left, I guess I'll eat rice.
Mua cái này vậy.
I'll buy this one then (since the one I wanted isn't here).
04
Connecting Thoughts ("So" or "Therefore")
At the beginning of a sentence, functions as a conjunction similar to the English "so." It connects the previous context to a conclusion or a new suggestion. In spoken Southern Vietnamese, this is often used to confirm plans or react to information.
Vậy hả?
Is that so? / Really?
Vậy ngày mai gặp nha.
So, see you tomorrow.
Vậy tui không đi nữa.
So I won't go anymore.
