A great many Hakka sentences close with a small particle that colours the whole utterance — turning it into a question, softening it, or lending it feeling. These are not decoration. Leaving them off does not make a sentence wrong, but it makes it flat and abrupt, and much of what English carries with intonation is carried here by the choice of particle.
01
喺 — Checking a Guess
(heˋhé) turns a statement into a question that expects agreement, in the way English tags … isn't it? or … right? onto the end. The speaker already believes what is being said and is asking for confirmation.
你在該睡目喺?
nˇ di ge soi mugˋ heˋǹ ti ke soi muk hé
Are you sleeping?
你也有屙痢肚喺?
nˇ ia iuˊ oˊ li duˋ heˋǹ ya yû ô li tú hé
Do you also have diarrhea?
正經喺?
ziin ginˊ heˋchṳn kîn hé
Really?
02
呢 — Softening a Question
(noˋnó) closes a question that already contains a question word, making it gentler and more engaged. It never forms a question by itself — the question word does that — but it changes a bald enquiry into an interested one.
仰會恁樣呢?
ngiongˋ voi anˋ ngiongˇ noˋngióng voi án ngiòng nó
How could it be like this?
佢有幾高呢?
giˇ iuˊ giˋ goˊ noˋkì yû kí kô nó
How tall is she?
𫣆俚做麼个無愛去餐廳食飯呢?
enˊ liˋ zo maˋ ge moˇ oi hi conˊ tangˊ siid fan noˋên lí cho má ke mò oi hi chhôn thâng sṳ̍t fan nó
Why don't we go and eat at a restaurant?
03
呢 — And What About …?
After a noun, and with no verb at all, (noˋnó) throws the question just asked back at someone else. The whole of the previous question is understood, so the sentence needs nothing but the noun and the particle.
你呢?
nˇ noˋǹ nó
And you?
你兜呢?
nˇ deuˊ noˋǹ têu nó
And you lot?
該佢呢?
ge giˇ noˋke kì nó
And what about her?
04
啦 — Softening a Suggestion
(laˋlá) takes the edge off a suggestion or a concession, giving the warmth of English let's just … or all right then. It marks the speaker as going along with something, or as proposing without pressing.
𫣆俚食義大利菜啦。
enˊ liˋ siid ngi tai li coi laˋên lí sṳ̍t ngi thai li chhoi lá
Let's just have Italian food.
𫣆俚天光日來去看電影啦。
enˊ liˋ tienˊ gongˊ ngidˋ loiˇ hi kon tien iangˋ laˋên lí thiên kông ngit lòi hi khon thien yáng lá
Come on, let's go see a movie tomorrow.
好啦,你做得再搞一到遊戲。
hoˋ laˋ nˇ zo dedˋ zai gauˋ idˋ do iuˇ hihó lá ǹ cho tet chai káu yit to yù hi
All right, you can play one more game.
05
哪 — Feeling
(nai) adds force or emotion to a statement, and is what makes an exclamation sound genuinely felt rather than merely reported.
實在還歡喜哪!
siid cai hanˇ fonˊ hiˋ naisṳ̍t chhai hàn fôn hí nai
I'm really so happy!
06
Choosing One
Each particle has a job of its own: (heˋhé) seeks agreement, (noˋnó) softens a question, (laˋlá) softens a suggestion, (nai) adds feeling. They occupy the same final slot and only one is used at a time.
