To compare things, Romanian does not change the adjective's ending the way English adds "-er / -est". It places small words in front, which keeps it very regular.
01
Comparative: 'mai' = more
Put ("more") before the adjective. The word never changes:
mai mare
bigger
mai mic
smaller
Casa mea e mai mare.
My house is bigger.
For "than", use :
El e mai înalt decât mine.
He is taller than me.
02
Superlative: 'cel mai' = the most
For "the most / -est", add the article before . Unlike , this agrees in gender and number with the noun - (m sg), (f sg), (m pl), (f pl):
cel mai mare
the biggest (masculine)
cea mai bună
the best (feminine)
Acesta e cel mai bun restaurant.
This is the best restaurant.
03
Equality: 'la fel de'
For "as … as", use :
la fel de mare
as big
04
Nothing Like Good / Better / Best
(good) is regular in Romanian, simply taking : (better), (the best) - easier than English "good / better / best".
