Polish nouns are categorized into three grammatical genders: masculine, feminine, and neuter. The gender of a noun is fixed and determines the form of the adjectives, pronouns, and verbs associated with it.
In most cases, you can identify the gender simply by looking at the last letter of the word in its basic (singular, nominative) form.
01
Masculine Nouns
The vast majority of masculine nouns end in a consonant.
To jest nowy telefon.
This is a new phone.
Ten stół jest duży.
This table is big.
There is a specific group of masculine nouns that end in the vowel . These almost always refer to male roles or titles, such as dad, colleague, or man. While they have the ending typical of feminine nouns, they function grammatically as masculine.
Nasz tata jest w domu.
Our dad is at home.
Sub-categories of Masculine Nouns
Within the masculine gender, nouns are further divided into three categories based on what they represent. This distinction becomes crucial when changing the word's form (declension):
- Personal: Refers to male humans (e.g., son, teacher).
- Animate: Refers to animals and sometimes supernatural beings (e.g., cat, ghost).
- Inanimate: Refers to objects, places, and abstract concepts (e.g., car, cheese).
02
Feminine Nouns
Most feminine nouns end in the vowel .
Twoja siostra jest miła.
Your sister is nice.
Polska to piękny kraj.
Poland is a beautiful country.
A smaller group of feminine nouns ends in the vowel , typically referring to people, such as lady/Mrs. or landlady.
Feminine Nouns Ending in Consonants
Some feminine nouns end in a soft consonant rather than a vowel. There is no absolute rule to identify these instantly, but many abstract nouns ending in fall into this category (e.g., love, freedom). Other common examples include night and blood.
To była długa noc.
It was a long night.
Miłość jest ważna.
Love is important.
03
Neuter Nouns
Neuter nouns typically end in the vowels , , or .
To okno jest otwarte.
This window is open.
Słońce świeci.
The sun is shining.
To małe zwierzę je.
That small animal is eating.
Latin Loanwords
Nouns borrowed from Latin that end in are also neuter. Examples include museum or center. A unique feature of these words is that they do not change their form at all in the singular, regardless of their grammatical function in the sentence.
To muzeum jest zamknięte.
This museum is closed.
