Possession with داشتَن

(dâštandâshtandaštn) is "to have", and it behaves like an ordinary transitive verb - but with two peculiarities worth knowing early.

01

The Present Takes No می‌ (mi-)

Like "to be", (dâštandâshtandaštn) builds its present tense without the prefix.

  • ⁧دارَم⁩

    dâramdâramdarm

    I have

  • ⁧داری⁩

03

The Subjunctive Is Built the Long Way

Because it has no ⁧بِ⁩ (be-) form, (dâštandâshtandaštn) makes its subjunctive out of its ⁧ـِه⁩ (-e) form plus (bâšambâshambašm).

  • ⁧روزِ خوبی داشتِه باشید.⁩

ruz-e xubi dâšte bâšidruz-e khubi dâshte bâshidrvz-a xvby dašt bašyd

May I have the bill, please?

04

As a Light Verb

(dâštandâshtandaštn) also builds a whole family of compound verbs about states and needs.

  • ⁧مَن بِه یِک ماشین نیاز دارَم.⁩

man be yek mâšin niyâz dâramman be yek mâshin niyâz dârammn b yk mašyn nyyaz darm

  • ⁧عَجَلِه دارَم.⁩

    ʿajale dâram'ajale dâramʿjl darm

05

Other Ways to Own Something

Possession does not always need this verb. An ezafe or a possessive ending will often do the same work in fewer words - (ketâb-e manketâb-e manktab-a mn) and (ketâbamketâbamktabm) both say the book is mine. There is also (dârây-edârây-edaray), an adjective meaning "possessed of", which takes "to be" rather than "to have" and belongs to formal description.

  • ⁧این مَزرَعِه دارایِ دُو اَسب وَ سِه گُوسفَند اَست.⁩
