The Adverb '很'

(hěnㄏㄣˇhên3) means "very" but serves a second, crucial role: it is required before a lone adjective as a filler, even when no emphasis is intended. (wǒ hěn hǎoㄨㄛˇ ㄏㄣˇ ㄏㄠˇwo3 hên3 hao3) simply means "I'm fine," not "I'm very fine." Without (hěnㄏㄣˇhên3), a bare adjective implies comparison.

Other degree adverbs like (zhēnㄓㄣchên1) — really, (tàiㄊㄞˋt'ai4) — too, or (fēi·chángㄈㄟ·ㄔㄤˊfei1·ch'ang2) — extremely, can replace it when emphasis is intended.
