Expressing 'should' with '-야겠다'

The structure (-ya·get·da-ya·get·da-ya·get·da-ya·keyt·ta) combines the obligation particle (ya) with the suffix (getgetgetkeyt) to express a personal conclusion that something should or needs to be done. It translates to "should," "had better," or "I guess I need to."

Unlike (-ya ha·da-ya ha·da-ya ha·da-ya ha·ta) or (-ya dœ·da-ya doe·da-ya doe·da-ya tway·ta), which state obligation as a general fact, (-ya·get·da-ya·get·da-ya·get·da-ya·keyt·ta) adds the speaker's subjective judgment. It signals that the speaker has assessed the situation and personally decided that the action is necessary.

01

Construction

The verb stem is conjugated following the same vowel harmony rules as other (ya) structures, and then (getgetgetkeyt) is added before the sentence ending.

  • Stems ending in (a) or (o): Add (a·ya·geta·ya·geta·ya·geta·ya·keyt).
  • Stems ending in other vowels: Add (ŏ·ya·geteo·ya·getŏ·ya·gete·ya·keyt).
  • For (ha·daha·daha·daha·ta) verbs: Change to (hæ·ya·gethae·ya·gethae·ya·gethay·ya·keyt).

After (getgetgetkeyt), add the appropriate sentence ending for the politeness level.

  • 가다 → 가야겠어요

Expressing a Personal Decision
