The conditional mood, or , is used to talk about hypothetical events, possibilities, and polite requests. It is the equivalent of using "would" in English. It exists in two tenses: present and past.
01
Forming the Present Conditional
The present conditional is formed by taking the stem of the future tense and adding a specific set of endings.
The endings are the same for all verb groups:
- io (I): -ei
- tu (you): -esti
- lui/lei (he/she): -ebbe
- noi (we): -emmo
- voi (you all): -este
- loro (they): -ebbero
-ARE Verbs (e.g., parlare - to speak)
For -ARE verbs, change the -a- in the infinitive to -e- and drop the final -e to create the stem ( → ). Then add the endings.
Io parlerei con lui, se potessi.
I would speak with him, if I could.
Loro parlerebbero solo in italiano.
They would only speak in Italian.
-ERE Verbs (e.g., prendere - to take)
For -ERE verbs, simply drop the final -e from the infinitive to create the stem ( → ).
Prenderesti un altro caffè?
Would you take another coffee?
Noi prenderemmo il treno delle cinque.
We would take the five o'clock train.
-IRE Verbs (e.g., finire - to finish)
For -IRE verbs, also drop the final -e from the infinitive to create the stem ( → ).
Finirei i compiti, ma sono stanco.
I would finish the homework, but I'm tired.
Lei finirebbe il progetto entro domani.
She would finish the project by tomorrow.

Irregular Verbs in the Conditional
Many common verbs are irregular in the conditional. Their stems are the same as their irregular future stems. The endings, however, remain regular.
Here are some of the most common irregular stems:
- essere (to be) → , ...
- avere (to have) → , ...
- andare (to go) → , ...
- potere (to be able to) → , ...
- dovere (to have to) → , ...
- volere (to want) → , ...
- fare (to do/make) → , ...
- vedere (to see) → , ...
- venire (to come) → , ...
Sarebbe una buona idea.

Uses of the Present Conditional
1. Wishes and Desires
This is one of the most frequent uses, especially with the verb (to want) and the expression (would be pleasing).
Vorrei un bicchiere d'acqua, per favore.
I would like a glass of water, please.
Mi piacerebbe andare in Italia quest'estate.
I would like to go to Italy this summer.
2. Polite Requests and Advice
The conditional softens requests, making them more polite than the imperative. It is also used to give advice or suggestions, often with (should) or (could).
Potresti chiudere la porta?
Could you close the door?
Dovresti studiare di più per l'esame.
You should study more for the exam.
Al posto tuo, non lo farei.

3. Hypothetical Situations
It describes an action that would happen if a certain condition were met. This is often paired with an "if" clause ( + imperfect subjunctive).
Se avessi più soldi, comprerei una macchina nuova.
If I had more money, I would buy a new car.
Andremmo al mare se non piovesse.
We would go to the sea if it weren't raining.
4. Future in the Past
The conditional is used to express a future action from a past point of view. It describes something that "would happen" after a moment in the past.
Sapevo che saresti venuto.
I knew that you would come.
Mi ha detto che mi avrebbe chiamato.
He told me that he would call me.
5. Unconfirmed Information or Opinions
In journalism and formal speech, the conditional is used to report information that is not fully confirmed, or to express a personal opinion cautiously.
Secondo le notizie, l'incidente sarebbe avvenuto ieri sera.
According to the news, the accident supposedly happened last night.
Direi che questa è la soluzione migliore.
I would say that this is the best solution.

The Past Conditional
The past conditional () describes an action that "would have happened" in the past but did not, usually because a condition was not met.
It is a compound tense formed with the present conditional of the auxiliary verb ( or ) and the past participle of the main verb.
- Formation: + past participle
Se me l'avessi chiesto, ti avrei aiutato.
If you had asked me, I would have helped you.
Saremmo andati alla festa, ma eravamo troppo stanchi.
