Sentence-Final Particles: 喺, 呢, 啦 and 哪

A great many Hakka sentences close with a small particle that colours the whole utterance — turning it into a question, softening it, or lending it feeling. These are not decoration. Leaving them off does not make a sentence wrong, but it makes it flat and abrupt, and much of what English carries with intonation is carried here by the choice of particle.

01

喺 — Checking a Guess

(meˇme) turns a statement into a question that expects agreement, in the way English tags … isn't it? or … right? onto the end. The speaker already believes what is being said and is asking for confirmation.

  • 你也有屙痢肚喺?

ngi rha+ rhiuˋ oˋ li+ duˊ meˇngì yå yiû ô li̊ tú me

    Do you also have diarrhea?

  • 正經喺?

    zhinˇ ginˋ meˇchin kîn me

    Really?

02

呢 — Softening a Question

(noˇno) closes a question that already contains a question word, making it gentler and more engaged. It never forms a question by itself — the question word does that — but it changes a bald enquiry into an interested one.

  • 仰會恁樣呢?

    ngiong+ voi+ anˊ ngiong no+ngio̊ng vo̊i án ngiòng no̊

How could it be like this?

  • 佢有幾高呢?

gi rhiuˋ giˊ goˋ no+kì yiû kí kô no̊

    How tall is she?

  • 𫣆俚做麼个無愛去餐廳食飯呢?

enˋ li zoˇ maˋ gaiˇ mo oiˇ hiˇ conˋ tangˋ shidˋ pon+ no+ên lì tso mâ kai mò oi hi tshôn thâng shi̍t pho̊n no̊

Why don't we go and eat at a restaurant?

03

呢 — And What About …?

After a noun, and with no verb at all, (noˇno) throws the question just asked back at someone else. The whole of the previous question is understood, so the sentence needs nothing but the noun and the particle.

  • 你呢?

    ngi noˇngì no

    And you?

  • 你兜呢?

    ngi deuˋ noˇngì têu no

    And you lot?

  • 該佢呢?

    gai gi noˇkài kì no

    And what about her?

04

啦 — Softening a Suggestion

(laˇla) takes the edge off a suggestion or a concession, giving the warmth of English let's just … or all right then. It marks the speaker as going along with something, or as proposing without pressing.

  • 𫣆俚食義大利菜啦。

enˋ li shidˋ ngi+ tai+ li+ coiˇ laˇên lì shi̍t ngi̊ thåi li̊ tshoi la

    Let's just have Italian food.

  • 𫣆俚天光日來去看電影啦。

enˋ li tienˋ gongˋ ngid loi hiˇ konˇ tien+ rhangˊ laˇên lì thiên kông ngit lòi hi khon thie̊n yáng la

Come on, let's go see a movie tomorrow.

  • 好啦,你做得再搞一到遊戲。

hoˊ laˇ ngi zoˇ ded zaiˇ gauˊ rhid doˇ rhiu hiˇhó la ngì tso tet tsai káu yit to yiù hi

All right, you can play one more game.

05

哪 — Feeling

(nai+nåi) adds force or emotion to a statement, and is what makes an exclamation sound genuinely felt rather than merely reported.

  • 實在還歡喜哪!

shidˋ cai+ han fonˋ hiˊ nai+shi̍t tshåi hàn fôn hí nåi

    I'm really so happy!

06

Choosing One

Each particle has a job of its own: (meˇme) seeks agreement, (noˇno) softens a question, (laˇla) softens a suggestion, (nai+nåi) adds feeling. They occupy the same final slot and only one is used at a time.
