Nouns: Locative Case (-mi)

The locative ending -mi says where something is or happens, like English "in", "at" or "on". In the plural it is -ni. It also says when.

01

Where

  • Neriniartarfimmi igasuuvunga.

    I am a cook at a restaurant.

  • Angajoqqaakka bankimi suliffeqarput.

My parents work in a bank.

  • Asseq kusanartoq iikkami nivingavoq.

The beautiful photo hangs on the wall.

02

How the Ending Joins the Word

After a vowel, -mi is simply added: "house", "in the house". Many nouns change their end first, and the dictionary form does not show how: in "school" the k becomes m, , while "dog" loses its q, , and "child" becomes .

  • Kammaga allaffimmi suliffeqarpoq.

My friend works in an office. (allaffik: k becomes m)

03

When

Months, days, years and the weekend take the locative.

  • Juunimi Swahilit oqaasiinik ilinniarpunga.

04

In My …, In Our …

With an owner the locative has its own endings: -nni "in my, in your", -tsinni "in our".

  • Aningaasivinni tretten dollariinnaateqarpunga.

I have only thirteen dollars in my wallet.

  • Illoqarfitsinni ivigaqartorujussuuvoq.

  • Ininni torrassaaq.

It will look great in my room.

05

Where, Not Where To

The locative is only where something is or happens. Where something goes to takes a different ending, -mut, and where it comes from -mit.

  • Allaffimmi taarsissavaatit.

She will replace you at the office.

  • Parkimi aneerusuppunga.

I want to go to a park. (lit. I want to be outdoors in a park)

Between Two

The plural locative also says "among" or "between".
