Going Somewhere: -mukar-, -liar-, -moor-, -nngar-

Several suffixes build the place into a verb of going, so that "go to the shop" is a single word.

01

-mukar-: Go To

-mukar- "go to" works like the ending -mut "to" turned into a verb. On a word with an owner ending it becomes -nukar-, just as -mut becomes -nut.

  • Pisiniarfissuarmukarpunga.

I went to the shopping mall. (pisiniarfissuaq + -mukar-)

  • Kiaguppunga. Sissamukarta?

I'm hot. Let's go to the beach.

  • Illoqarfiup qeqqanukarniaruma aqqutissara nassuiarsinnaaviuk?

Can you tell me how to get to the city center? (qeqqa "its middle" + -nukar-)

02

-liar-: Go To

-liar- also means "go to". The last consonant of the place drops before it.

  • Pisiniarfissualiartariaqarpunga.

I need to go to the supermarket.

  • Pisiniarfilialaarit, manniit aqqaneq marluk pisiarissavatit.

Please go to the store and buy a dozen eggs. (pisiniarfik + -lia-)

03

Where To?

A fourth suffix, -nngar- "be on the way to", goes on sumut "where to" to ask where someone is going.

  • Sumunngalerpit?

Where are you going? (sumut + -nngar- "be on the way to" + -ler-)

04

-moor-: Towards

-moor- "towards, heading for" gives words such as "the one meant for you".

  • Manniit aqqaneq marluk pisiaraakka, sukkulaatiminerlu ilinnoortoq.

I bought a dozen eggs and a candy bar for you too.
