02
Negation with Compound Tenses
In compound tenses, such as the passé composé, the sentence contains two verb parts: the auxiliary verb (usually or ) and the past participle. In this case, the negation surrounds the auxiliary verb, not the main verb (the participle).

03
Position with Object Pronouns

Je ne le vois pas.
I do not see him.
Elle ne lui parle pas.
She is not speaking to him.
Nous ne y allons pas.
We are not going there.
In compound tenses with pronouns, the structure wraps around the auxiliary verb:
Je ne l'ai pas vu.
I did not see him.
04
Negating Infinitives
There is a specific exception to the "sandwich" rule. When negating a verb in its infinitive form (the unconjugated "to do" form), both and are placed together before the verb. This is common when giving general instructions or warnings.
Prière de ne pas déranger.
Please do not disturb.
J'ai peur de ne pas réussir.
I am afraid of not succeeding.
Il m'a dit de ne pas attendre.
He told me not to wait.
05
Replacing 'Pas'

- : never

- : nothing / not anything
- : nobody / not anyone
Je ne fume jamais.
I never smoke.
Il ne veut plus manger.
He does not want to eat anymore.
