English has one word for "we" and it is permanently ambiguous. If a colleague says "We're going for lunch", you cannot tell whether you are invited. Tagalog settles the question in the pronoun itself, and choosing wrongly can genuinely offend or confuse.
01
The Distinction
- — inclusive: me and you (and possibly others). You are part of the group.
- — exclusive: me and others, but not you. You are left out.
Kumakain kami ng pananghalian.
We are eating lunch. (my group — you are not with us)
Kumakain tayo ng pananghalian.
We are eating lunch. (you and I together)
02
It Runs Through All Three Sets
The inclusive/exclusive split is not limited to the ang-set. Every "we" form comes in both flavours, so the distinction has to be made no matter which slot the pronoun fills.
- ang-set: (incl.) vs (excl.)
- ng-set: (incl.) vs (excl.)
- sa-set: (incl.) vs (excl.)
Malaki at maganda ang bahay natin sa probinsya.
Our house in the province is big and beautiful. (yours and mine)
Malaki ang bahay namin.
Our house is big. (my family's, not yours)
Dadalhin ko ito sa amin.
I will bring this to our place. (my home, not yours)
03
Getting It Right in Practice
Ask yourself one question before you say "we": is the person I am talking to inside the group or outside it?
- Inviting someone along, or describing something you share →
- Telling someone about your family, your team, your company →
Pupunta tayo sa supermarket.
Let's go to the supermarket. (an invitation)
Pupunta kami sa supermarket.
We're going to the supermarket. (a report — you're not coming)
Using where was expected quietly shuts the listener out, and using to a stranger can sound presumptuous. Filipinos notice the difference immediately.
04
'tayo' as "Let's"
Because already includes the listener, it is the natural way to make a suggestion. Often no separate word for "let's" is needed at all.
Kumain na tayo.
Let's eat now.
Simulan na natin ang klase.
Let's start the class.
