The Particles 'na' and 'pa'

and are a matched pair of tiny words that carry a surprising amount of meaning. They tell you whether a situation has changed or is still going, and Filipinos use them constantly.

01

'na' — Already, Now

signals that a state has been reached — something is now true that was not true before.

  • Gabi na. Kailangan ko nang umalis.

It is late already. I have to go now.

  • Huli na ang bus.

    The bus is late now.

  • Luma na ang librong ito.

    This book is old now.

  • Gusto ko nang umuwi.

I want to go home now.

  • Alas-siyete na ng umaga.

    It is seven o'clock already.

English often leaves this untranslated, but the Tagalog carries a clear sense of "as of now, this has become the case".

02

'pa' — Still, Yet

is the mirror image: the situation has not changed, or there is more to come.

  • Pwede pa akong magtagal.

    I can still stay longer.

  • Hindi ko pa kailangang umalis.

I don't need to leave yet.

  • Bata pa siya.

    She is still young.

  • Kumakain pa ako.

    I am still eating.

03

The Pair in Questions and Answers

The contrast shows up most sharply in a simple exchange.

  • Kumain ka na ba? Hindi pa.

Have you eaten already? Not yet.

  • Tapos ka na ba? Hindi pa.

    Are you done? Not yet.

is one of the most useful two-word replies in the language.

04

Position

Both are enclitics, so they follow the first word — and they come before other particles like and .

  • Kumain ka na ba?

    Have you eaten already?

  • Wala pa po siya.

He is not here yet, sir/ma'am.

05

Careful: Three Different 'na'

The word does three unrelated jobs in Tagalog, and only context separates them:

  • The particle meaning already:
  • The linker joining a modifier to a noun:
  • The relative pronoun "that / which / who":
  • Luma na ang librong ito.

This book is old already. (particle)

  • Bahay na bago

a house that is new (linker)

Do not try to force one explanation onto all three — they are simply homonyms that happen to be very frequent.

06

'nang' After 'na'

When the particle is followed by a word needing a linker, the two fuse into .

  • Kailangan ko nang umalis.

I have to go now. (na + linker)
