is the most common object-focus affix. It puts the thing acted on in the spotlight: that thing takes , and the doer drops to the ng-set.
01
The Basic Swap
Kumain ako ng mansanas.
I ate an apple. (actor focus: doer = ako)
Kinain ko ang mansanas.
I ate the apple. (object focus: doer = ko)
Notice two changes at once. The verb shape changed, and the doer switched from the ang-pronoun to the ng-pronoun . Those two always travel together.
02
Attaching the Suffix
goes on the end of the root. Its exact shape depends on the last sound:
- Root ends in a consonant → plain : → , →
- Root ends in a vowel → : → , → , →
Some very frequent roots also shift a vowel or lose one when the suffix is added — → , → , → , → . These are worth learning as whole words.
Magandang ideya. Gawin natin yan.
Good idea. Let's do that.
Dalhin mo ang iyong bag.
Bring your bag.
Wag mong kainin yan!
Don't eat that!
03
Why It Is So Common in Commands
When you tell someone to do something to a specific thing, the thing is by definition definite — so object focus is the natural choice. Everyday Tagalog commands are overwhelmingly and forms, not actor-focus forms.
Basahin mo ang libro.
Read the book.
Ulitin mo nga.
Say it again.
Bilhin mo ang tinapay.
Buy the bread.
04
The Definiteness Effect
This is the practical payoff of the whole focus system. Because the spotlighted noun carries , and signals a definite, known item, choosing object focus is how Tagalog says "the" rather than "a".
Bumili ako ng libro.
I bought a book. (some book)
Binili ko ang libro.
I bought the book. (that particular book)
English marks this with articles; Tagalog marks it by choosing a different verb. If the object is specific, reach for the object-focus form.
