Verbs: Present Progressive

The present progressive tense describes actions that are currently in progress at the exact moment of speaking. It is formed by combining the verb (to be) with the gerund of the main verb. This structure is very similar to the English "to be + -ing" (e.g., "I am walking").

01

Conjugating Estar

The first component is the verb conjugated in the present tense. Note the inclusion of , which is standard in European Spanish.

  • (I am)
  • (you are)
  • (he/she/you are)
  • (we are)
  • (you all are)
  • (they/you are)

02

Forming the Gerund

The gerund is the second component and remains unchanged regardless of the subject.

-AR Verbs: Remove the ending and add .

  • →

  • Juan está trabajando en la oficina.

Juan is working in the office.

-ER and -IR Verbs: Remove the or ending and add .

  • ¿Qué estáis escribiendo?

Usage Rules and Restrictions

While similar to English, the Spanish present progressive is more restrictive. It is used only for actions happening right now. It emphasizes that the subject is "in the middle of" doing something.

No Future Meaning: Unlike English, you cannot use this tense for future plans.

English: "I am leaving tomorrow." (Correct)

Spanish: "" (Incorrect)

For future actions, use the simple present () or the periphrastic future ().

Simple Present vs. Progressive: In Spanish, the simple present can also describe ongoing actions.

  • ¿Qué haces?

What are you doing? / What do you do?

  • ¿Qué estás haciendo?

What are you doing (right now)?

The progressive form adds emphasis to the duration or the immediate nature of the action.

05

Placement of Pronouns

When using reflexive verbs or object pronouns with the present progressive, there are two correct positions for the pronoun:

1. Before the conjugated form of .

  • Me estoy lavando las manos.

    I am washing my hands.

2. Attached to the end of the gerund. If you attach the pronoun, you must add an accent mark to the gerund to maintain the original stress.

  • Estoy lavándome las manos.

    I am washing my hands.
