Near Future with 'ir a'

The construction + infinitive is the most common way to express future actions in spoken Spanish. It corresponds directly to the English structure "going to" (e.g., "I am going to eat"). It is used to discuss plans, intentions, or events that are about to happen.

01

Formation

To form this tense, use the present tense of the verb (to go), followed by the preposition , and finally the infinitive of the main verb (the action being performed).

The formula is: Conjugated + + Infinitive

Since is an irregular verb, you must conjugate it correctly according to the subject:

  • (I am going)
  • (you are going)
  • (he/she/you are going)
  • (we are going)
  • (you all are going - European Spanish)
  • (they/you all are going)
  • Voy a estudiar español.

I am going to study Spanish.

  • ¿Vas a comprar el pan?

Are you going to buy bread?

  • Mis padres van a venir mañana.

My parents are going to come tomorrow.

02

Usage: Plans and Intentions

This structure is primarily used for decisions that have already been made or definite plans for the future. It implies a higher level of certainty than the simple future tense.

  • El año que viene vamos a viajar a Italia.

Next year we are going to travel to Italy.

  • Hoy no voy a trabajar.

I am not going to work today.

03

Usage: Imminent Events and Predictions

You also use this construction to describe something that is about to happen very soon, or to make a prediction based on evident signs (logic/evidence).

  • ¡Cuidado, vas a caer!

Careful, you are going to fall!

  • Mira las nubes, va a llover.

Look at the clouds, it is going to rain.

04

Word Order with Pronouns

When using reflexive verbs or object pronouns with this structure, you have two options for placement. The meaning does not change.

Option 1: Place the pronoun before the conjugated form of .

  • Te voy a llamar luego.

I am going to call you later.

  • Nos vamos a dormir.

We are going to go to sleep.

Option 2: Attach the pronoun directly to the end of the infinitive.

  • Voy a llamarte luego.

I am going to call you later.

  • Vamos a dormirnos.

We are going to go to sleep.

05

Contrast with the Simple Future

In European Spanish, there is a distinction between the construction and the Simple Future tense (e.g., - I will eat).

The form is preferred for:

  • Immediate future (happening soon).
  • Concrete plans and arrangements.
  • Informal conversation.

The Simple Future is often reserved for:

  • Distant future.
  • Solemn promises or predictions without immediate evidence.
  • Expressing probability in the present (e.g., "He must be at home").
  • Voy a limpiar mi habitación.

I am going to clean my room. (A concrete plan for the near future)

  • Algún día limpiaré el océano.

Someday I will clean the ocean. (A distant, vague aspiration)
