Softening a Request with '吖'

The particle (aa1āaa1) is placed at the end of a sentence to soften its tone. It transforms a direct command into a polite request, or a simple statement into a gentle suggestion. Using (aa1āaa1) makes your speech sound more friendly, casual, and less demanding.

01

Turning Commands into Polite Requests

Adding (aa1āaa1) to the end of an imperative sentence is a very common way to make a polite request. It functions similarly to adding "please" or using a softer intonation in English.

Compare the tone of these sentences:

Without 吖 (aa1)

  • 幫我。

    bong1 ngo5.bōng ngóh.bong1 ngo5.

    Help me.

This is a direct command and can sound abrupt.

With 吖 (aa1)

  • 幫我吖。

    bong1 ngo5 aa1.bōng ngóh ā.bong1 ngo5 aa1.

    Could you help me, please?

This is a much softer and more polite request.

Here are more examples:

  • 你等我一陣吖。

    nei5 dang2 ngo5 jat1·zan6 aa1.néih dáng ngóh yāt·jahn ā.nei5 dang2 ngo5 jat7·dzan6 aa1.

Please wait for me a moment.

  • 畀張紙巾我吖。

    bei2 zoeng1 zi2·gan1 ngo5 aa1.béi jēung jí·gān ngóh ā.bei2 dzoeng1 dzi2·gan1 ngo5 aa1.

Could you give me a napkin, please?

02

Making Gentle Suggestions

(aa1āaa1) is also used to propose an idea or make a suggestion. It frames the suggestion as an open question, inviting the other person to agree, rather than stating a fixed plan.

As a statement of a plan

  • 我哋去睇戲。

    ngo5·dei6 heoi3 tai2·hei3.ngóh·deih heui tái·hei.ngo5·dei6 hoey3 tai2·hei3.

We are going to watch a movie.

As a suggestion

  • 我哋去睇戲吖。

    ngo5·dei6 heoi3 tai2·hei3 aa1.ngóh·deih heui tái·hei ā.ngo5·dei6 hoey3 tai2·hei3 aa1.

How about we go watch a movie?

Another example:

  • 不如我哋食日本菜吖。

    bat1·jyu4 ngo5·dei6 sik6 jat6·bun2 coi3 aa1.bāt·yùh ngóh·deih sihk yaht·bún choi ā.bat7·jy4 ngo5·dei6 sik9 jat9·bun2 tsoi3 aa1.

How about we eat Japanese food instead?

03

Asking for Permission or Agreement

When asking for permission or checking if someone agrees with a proposal, adding (aa1āaa1) makes the question sound more gentle and less confrontational. It is often used with phrases like (hou2 m4 hou2hóu m̀h hóuhou2 m4 hou2) (is it good?) or (dak1 m4 dak1dāk m̀h dākdak7 m4 dak7) (is it okay?).

  • 我坐呢度得唔得吖?
