Question Markers '呀' & '啊'

The sentence-final particles (aa3aaa3) and (aa3aaa3) are frequently used in spoken language to add a specific mood or to turn a statement into a question. While their usage can sometimes overlap, they have distinct primary functions. In Hong Kong, (aa3aaa3) is the most common particle for forming the types of questions described below.

01

Softening a Question with '呀'

Adding (aa3aaa3) with a mid-level, non-falling tone (Jyutping tone 3) to the end of a question makes it sound softer, more casual, and less abrupt. It is extremely common in everyday conversation to make interactions feel more friendly.

Compare a direct question with its softened version:

  • 你食飯未?

    nei5 sik6·faan6 mei6?néih sihk·faahn meih?nei5 sik9·faan6 mei6?

    Have you eaten yet? (Direct)

  • 你食飯未呀?

    nei5 sik6·faan6 mei6·aa3?néih sihk·faahn meih·a?nei5 sik9·faan6 mei6·aa3?

Have you eaten yet? (Softer, more conversational)

More examples:

  • 佢係邊個呀?

    keoi5 hai6 bin1 go3 aa3?kéuih haih bīn go a?koey5 hai6 bin1 go3 aa3?

    Who is he/she?

  • 你想飲咩呀?

    nei5 soeng2 jam2 me1 aa3?néih séung yám mē a?nei5 soeng2 jam2 me1 aa3?

What would you like to drink?

02

Seeking Confirmation or Expressing Surprise with '呀' (aa4)

When pronounced with a lower, falling tone (Jyutping tone 4), (aa3aaa3) changes the meaning. It is used when you are fairly certain of something but are looking for confirmation. It can also convey surprise or mild disbelief, similar to asking "Really?" or "Is that so?" in English.

This form is often used in response to a situation or new information.

  • 你唔去呀?

    nei5 m4 heoi3 aa4?néih m̀h heui àh?nei5 m4 hoey3 aa4?

You're not going? (Expressing surprise and seeking confirmation)

  • 原來係咁樣呀?

    jyun4·loi4 hai6 gam2·joeng2 aa4?yùhn·lòih haih gám·yéung àh?jyn4·loi4 hai6 gam2·joeng2 aa4?

Oh, so it's like that? (Showing realization and asking for confirmation)

  • 佢就係你細佬呀?

    keoi5 zau6·hai6 nei5 sai3·lou2 aa4?kéuih jauh·haih néih sai·lóu àh?koey5 dzau6·hai6 nei5 sai3·lou2 aa4?

So that's your younger brother? (Making an assumption and checking if it's correct)

03

The Difference Between '呀' and '啊'

In Hong Kong Cantonese, the character (aa3aaa3) is standard for the question functions mentioned above. The character (aa3aaa3) is more commonly used as an interjection to express sudden realization or emotion, similar to "Ah!" or "Oh!" in English.

  • 啊,我記得喇。

    aa3, ngo5 gei3·dak1 laa3.a, ngóh gei·dāk la.aa3, ngo5 gei3·dak7 laa3.

    Ah, I remember now.

However, in casual writing and in certain contexts, you may see them used interchangeably. For example, to affirm something, both are common.

  • 係呀。

    hai6 aa3.haih a.hai6 aa3.

    Yes, that's right.

  • 係啊。

    hai6 aa3.haih a.hai6 aa3.

    Yes, that's right.

For clarity as a learner, it is best to associate (aa3aaa3) with softening questions and seeking confirmation, and (aa3aaa3) with interjections.

04

Intonation: Question vs. Statement

The particle (aa3aaa3) can also be used in simple statements to add a sense of casual explanation. In these cases, your intonation is the key differentiator. A rising intonation at the end indicates a question, while a falling intonation indicates a statement.

  • 佢係我朋友呀。

    keoi5 hai6 ngo5 pang4·jau5 aa3.kéuih haih ngóh pàhng·yáuh a.koey5 hai6 ngo5 pang4·jau5 aa3.

He's my friend. (Statement, falling intonation)

  • 佢係我朋友呀?

    keoi5 hai6 ngo5 pang4·jau5 aa3?kéuih haih ngóh pàhng·yáuh a?koey5 hai6 ngo5 pang4·jau5 aa3?

He's your friend? (Question, rising intonation)
