Question Marker '㗎'

The final particle (gaa3gagaa3) is used to turn a statement into a question that expresses surprise, disbelief, or seeks confirmation about something unexpected. It implies that the information contradicts the speaker's prior assumptions.

It is a contraction of the emphasis particle (ge3gege3) and the question particle (aa3aaa3).

01

Expressing Surprise and Disbelief

The primary function of (gaa3gagaa3) is to react to new information that you find surprising. It's similar to adding "Really?!", "Wait, you mean...", or "Oh, so..." to a question in English.

  • 你唔去㗎?

    nei5 m4 heoi3 gaa3?néih m̀h heui ga?nei5 m4 hoey3 gaa3?

You're not going? (I was sure you were going.)

  • 佢哋分手㗎?

    keoi5·dei6 fan1·sau2 gaa3?kéuih·deih fān·sáu ga?koey5·dei6 fan1·sau2 gaa3?

They broke up?! (I thought they were happy together.)

  • 今日星期日㗎?

    gam1·jat6 sing1·kei4 jat6 gaa3?gām·yaht sīng·kèih yaht ga?gam1·jat9 sing1·kei4 jat9 gaa3?

It's Sunday today? (I completely thought it was Saturday.)

02

Seeking Confirmation

You can also use (gaa3gagaa3) when you observe a situation and want to confirm your surprising conclusion.

  • 你病咗㗎?

    nei5 beng6 zo2 gaa3?néih behng jó ga?nei5 beu6 dzo2 gaa3?

Are you sick? (You don't look well, which is unexpected.)

  • 架巴士走咗㗎?

    gaa3 baa1·si2 zau2 zo2 gaa3?ga bā·sí jáu jó ga?gaa3 baa1·si2 dzau2 dzo2 gaa3?

The bus has already left? (I thought we still had time.)

03

Comparing 㗎 (gaa3) with 呀 (aa3) and 咩 (me1)

The choice of final particle dramatically changes the tone of a question.

Neutral Question: 呀 (aa3)

This is a standard, neutral way to ask a question for information.

  • 佢係醫生呀?

    keoi5 hai6 ji1·sang1 aa3?kéuih haih yī·sāng a?koey5 hai6 ji1·sang1 aa3?

    Is she a doctor?

Surprised Question: 㗎 (gaa3)

This expresses surprise. You might have thought she had a different profession.

  • 佢係醫生㗎?

    keoi5 hai6 ji1·sang1 gaa3?kéuih haih yī·sāng ga?koey5 hai6 ji1·sang1 gaa3?

She's a doctor? (Really? I had no idea!)

Skeptical Question: 咩 (me1)

This expresses doubt or disbelief, often implying you think the answer is "no".

  • 佢係醫生咩?

    keoi5 hai6 ji1·sang1 me1?kéuih haih yī·sāng mē?koey5 hai6 ji1·sang1 me1?

Is she a doctor? (I highly doubt it.)

The intonation used with (gaa3gagaa3) is key. A higher, rising tone conveys genuine surprise, while a flatter tone can suggest mild skepticism.
